WHAT HAPPENED?
According to a sensational report from journalist Renzo Pantich, the 24-year-old has a 'verbal agreement' to become a Madrid player. However, BBC Sport, via SI, suggests there is no indication Chelsea would sell the Argentina international, and if they did, they would ask for more than the £106.8 million ($143m) they paid to Benfica back in 2023.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Fernandez has become a vital player for Chelsea this season and has played a huge role in them reaching the Conference League final and being in with a shout of qualifying for next season's Champions League. If he were to join Madrid, that would be a big blow for the Blues. But if an exit does happen, he would likely go for a monumental sum.

WHAT FERNANDEZ SAID
The former Benfica star, who has 20 goal contributions this season, seemed to suggest he was happy at Stamford Bridge earlier this month.
He said: "I’m so happy with my numbers. Being a box-to-box midfielder, it’s a really good number of goals and assists. It was difficult in the beginning, getting to know (head coach) Enzo [Maresca] and the way he wanted to play, but now I totally understand him and what he wants from me."
